Ah. To relax. Everyone wants to do it and do a lot of it. A good relaxing chair does not have to exist at the expense of an appealing form. In good industrial design, form may follow function, but its never a slave to function. Guys instinctively know this. This is why beautiful vintage cars still grace garages and workshops and streets all across America. Guys know that design is important for things like hot rods, but when it comes to things inside the living room, they suddenly black out. You've spent so many hours in the garage perfecting the inside of the engine of a sexy hot rod tripping on exhaust fumes, that you're content to relax in something reminiscent of a puffy floral covered curtain stuffed with cotton.

It doesn't have to be that way. We here at Manly Vintage are here to help. Below is a list of iconic and timeless lounge chairs that have great lines, look awesome in any home, and provide comfortable seating.

1. The Bertoia Diamond Chair with Seat Cushion

This classic chair was designed by Harry Bertoia in 1952 for the Knoll furniture company. Bertoia seems to have been obsessed with bent metal, as many of his most iconic pieces are constructed from bent steel. Of all the pieces featured in this post, some would argue that its the least comfortable. You can, however, choose to purchase the Diamond Chair with a full cover which increases the amount of padding. Personally, I've sat in them and found them more than adequate. The form, I presume, makes people think that it won't be as comfortable as it should be. They make a version which is good for outdoor seating. This bad boys look awesome next too a pool.

2. The Floating Lounge Chair by Milo Baughman

Baughman is one of my favorite furniture designers of all time. He loved chome and many of those chome pieces give off an ephemeral hollywood glam that is still muted enough to be presentable even in typical midwestern home. The chrome only gives off a hint of the seventies and even more-so a modern take on the Hollywood regency style. These chairs ooze comfort and style. Floating above the ground, they are reminiscent of much of the work of Swiss designer and artist Le Corbusier. I have a similar pair of chairs in my home and they are exceedingly comfortable. I wish I knew if mine were Baughman or not.

3. The Barcelona Chair by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Mies van der Rohe designed the entire Barcelona series for the World Exposition in Barcelona in 1929. The chair itself was said to be inspired by an Egyptian folding chair and a Roman folding footstool. It is one of the most famous pieces of modern furniture ever designed and made. My wife called the chair a "bachelor chair", and I would most definitely agree. America's Most excellent bachelor, Patrick Bateman rocked the Barcelona chair and ottoman.

4. lc2 by Le Corbusier

This chair, designed in 1928, was very controversial when it was released to the public. Lots have changed since then. Its considered to be so iconic, the museum of modern art keeps one in its collection. I can't think of a chair that looks more comfortable. Clean lines, lots of color and fabric choices, and tons of knock-offs to fit any budget, this chair would be a good choice for a lot of guys.

5. The Womb Chair by Eero Saarinen

The womb chair was designed in 1948 by Saarinen to be a chair that would be completely comfortable, almost "womb like". Get it? Anyways, this chair, designed by a Fin and manufactured by the American company Knoll, is really one of the most comfortable lounge chairs you can own.

Of all the chairs on the list, this is the one that I wish I had.

Best of 2010(part 1)

Uncategorized

Best of 2010

Win
<guid

Maybe it was a gift, has a pleasant shape, or some lol phrase on the side; you want that sparkle shining up at you every morning. Hey I get it. I'm in between two different ornaments myself. For a good two years I stayed faithful to a cheap K-Mart ornament. Plain white, nothing spectacular. Then Sarah thrifted this cool "history of the drag" ornament from the 80s that has really got my attention. It has all the noteworthy drag queen styles listed with the years, it's cool beans, and it's bigger. Ah, decisions.

So here are a handful of cute ornaments off of Etsy. We are pretty much down to the wire with any guarantees of arrival by Christmas, so act fast. With all those hot fresh tools in one place, I slightly arched my head back and let out a, “arr, arr, arr.”

Then it hit me, Home Improvement flashbacks dropped all over my frontal lobe. I use to watch that show, like all the time. Granted, I didn’t love the show, maybe didn’t even really like to the show, but it was on after school and was right before the Simpsons.

<a

Man, first-rate times, I guess. Besides the super cute mom, the rest of the cast borders on unbearably obnoxious. Ugh, and the later seasons with one son being goth, and the other a preachy liberal constantly talking about environmental nonsense; fast forward to the Simpsons please.

I looked up some quotes from the show and had a good laugh. From the quotes, I’d have to say my favorite character is head honcho Tim; and the way I’ve been acting around power tools lately, I think I’m becoming him.

<a

Pretty much a common hammer and screwdriver, cheap ones at that. And now, here I am at Home Depot, lusting over specific kinds of hammers. You mean there’s more than one kind of hammer? Yes my lad, there’s a plethora of diverse hammers; and check this out! You can choose a different weight for the same kind of hammer, you know, for comfort and smashing power.

Sure, Home Depot is a good choice for up-to-date power tools and items you lean towards wanting new; but lets not forget my first love, secondhand! More specifically, estate sales!

<a

Everything back then was tough as nails and made in the USA; built to last a lifetime baby. I highly recommend, purchasing your essential hand tools this way, you’ll get what you need dirt cheap, and be able to give new life to a piece of American history.

Not much time left before Christmas! Go hop on<a

Our blog relationship is very much like most friendships, a stronger person befriends a weaker person for that constant reminder of how much cooler they are. So thank you Jayson, for reminding me.

But really folks, competition does play a big part in this blog. Like, have you noticed blogging has been spotty the last month or so? No competition is to blame. For awhile we had a contest that required a post every other day, the first one to fail bought the other beer and cigarettes. Yeah, I won that bad boy, won it good.

Back to the project! I've had this antique occasional table sitting around for a couple years now, I originally bought it to set my fish tank on. It's not my style, and has spent all of it's time in the attic since we bought our house. It would still be up there if I hadn't discovered a wonderful little blog last week that's rocking my socks off.

The blog is Knack. I discovered Knack after trolling for a couple hours on Design Sponge, also a recently discovered blog. Knack is a woman completely obsessed with painting all things furniture, she guest posts on Design Sponge with a series called "Before and After Basics". Seriously worth bookmarking ever one of her posts.

I for one, have always been anti painting when it come to wood furniture. My parents always frowned upon it, so I always did. I still cringe looking at some of her(Knack's) furniture, but it was this little piece here, that set my heart afire and inspired my last minute bazaar project.

Yes, I'm still the worst blogger ever. Again I forgot to take a before picture, so I dug this poor res pic off my wife's Flicker. It looks halfway decent in this picture, but the top was very worn, and the whole piece was a pecan color, which has to be the most feminine color for furniture ever.

Before.

<img

After stripping and sanding the veneer, I fell in love and decided to let it shine.

I painted the bottom sexy flat black, kept the top natural, and finished the whole piece with polyurethane.

<a

Drag yourself and all your turkey stuffed, cranberry fed, and gravy stained friends and family to the third installment of this crazy vintage roller coaster that is the Vintage Bazaar.

This Bazaar will be a big deal for Jayson and I for numerous reasons. 1) Space. A 15' by 20' space. Our last booths had two tables with smalls stacked as high as safely possible. This time around furniture is king, with smalls guarding the rear. 2) Investment. We've both have put down a pretty penny to make sure our booth rocks the casbah. 3) Quality. We've managed some jaw dropping picks, with the utmost attention to detail, design, and quality. The staging is gonna be tight, the items killer, and the PBR plentiful.

I've spent every evening this week working at the arrangement of the space, and it going places let me tell ya. I struggled at the beginning with how to bring together our wide assorted of pieces, starting with 1930s industrial, to 1970s space age glam. What brought peace to my soul was dividing the space into three, mostly thinking back to amazing homes I've been during estate sales.

The front of the space is a high-end MCM living/dining room, sleek, clean, and expensive. The middle is the home's kitchen, laid back and cute. The back of the space is the basement, man cavernous to the extreme. The place to have beers with your buddies under a 10-point deer mount.

I really love the space, hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

So where are the pictures? With the sun gone by the time I get home, I simply couldn't get the lighting to place a that I could release pictures with good conscience. This weekend for sure. In the mean time, here are pictures of the geniuses that designed items that will grace the front of our booth.

<img

She was definitely caught up in the cute Scandinavian, danish modern clean lines, wave of moms, kinda thingy. Bright happy rooms make her happy. Crazy right?

<a

The wallpaper is cute and lovely, of course, and she excitedly told me her idea about having a accent wall in our dining room. An accent wall? First, what the heck is a accent wall? Second, what the heck would it do in my sparsely furnished viking lodge of a dining room? I gave her that look, you know that look that men do that makes a woman's blood boil?

The problem is I really can't defend my decor choices, all her criticism is of course spot on. Depressing junk is about right.

I think I've stretched myself a little thin in bringing home an over all style for our house. I'm not home all that much to put it all together, so real solid pieces or ideas just sit in different corners of the house, and well, everything just looks unfinished.

My wife and I have been talking a lot about the kind of husband I am, and stubborn and self-centered are at the top of my flaw list. I know dealing with these sins via home decor may sound flippant, but you gotta start somewhere. So here we go.

<img

I'd be lost without her, and I know she'll put together a home that makes us both proud. If that means birds and clouds in every room, whatever man.

AND. Lets not get too crazy. I do have a finished basement she only goes down to do laundry, it's all mine baby. First on the list, a manly vintage workshop. I've got tools up the ying yang with nowhere to go.

I'm thinking a cast-iron inspired, dark but well lit, industrial dungeon of home improvement. Definitely a project for the deep Chicago cold after the new year.

<a
